Storytelling Toronto is looking for involved, passionate individuals to join our Board of Directors. Candidates should have a desire to help grow a thriving organization dedicated to the development and preservation of oral storytelling, in all its forms. Board terms are two years with the possibility of renewal.

Current Board openings are:

  • Board Treasurer
  • Board Member (Legal)

Responsibilities for Board Treasurer include:

  • Provide the financial oversight and risk management advice to support the organization’s mission and sustainability
  • Approve expenses and have cheque signing authority
  • Provide guidance and expertise related to long-term financial growth including but not limited to asset building, revenue generation, and cost reduction.
  • Support the budgeting process in collaboration with the Executive Director
  • Meet monthly with the Executive Director to review financial reports —  ensuring all required financial reporting, internal controls, forms and remittances are in order and comply with legislation
  • Supporting Storytelling Toronto at our events, fundraisers and programs.
  • Time Commitment: Attendance at monthly board meetings and monthly committee meetings. Approximately 6 hours per month or as needed.  

Responsibilities for Board Member include:

  • Oversight of the organization
  • An understanding of non-profit compliance policies and procedures
  • Risk management skills to steward the organization to success
  • Strong expertise and experience in the legal and/or compliance sector on both the provincial and federal level
  • Supporting Storytelling Toronto at our events, fundraisers and programs.
  • Time Commitment: Attendance at monthly board meetings and monthly committee meetings. Approximately 6 hours per month or as needed.

What do you need to succeed?

  • Be a resident of the Greater Toronto Area and support the Storytelling Toronto mission, vision and values 
  • Strong legal acumen, understanding of non-profit responsibilities, and risk management skills
  • Hold a financial designation and/or have comparable experience
  • Understanding of internal and external controls
  • Be familiar with a governance-based Board of Directors and non-profit organizations, including the specific financial requirements of a registered charity
  • Collaboration skills that you can apply to working with shared leadership and in cross-functional teams
  • Strong, strategic self-management and organizational skills
