Storytelling Toronto is looking for involved, passionate individuals to join our Board of Directors. Individuals with a background in Human Resources and Project Management would thrive in this role. Candidates should have a desire to help grow a thriving organization dedicated to the development and preservation of oral storytelling, in all its forms. Board terms are one year with the possibility of renewal.

- Board Member (7 spots)
As a Board Member, you gain free access to our course offerings, as well as to the Toronto International Storytelling Festival, which Storytelling Toronto organizes!
Responsibilities for Board Treasurer include:
- Provide the financial oversight and risk management advice to support the organization’s mission and sustainability
- Approve expenses and have cheque signing authority
- Provide guidance and expertise related to long-term financial growth including but not limited to asset building, revenue generation, and cost reduction.
- Support the budgeting process in collaboration with the Executive Director
- Meet monthly with the Executive Director to review financial reports — ensuring all required financial reporting, internal controls, forms and remittances are in order and comply with legislation
- Supporting Storytelling Toronto at our events, fundraisers and programs.
- Time Commitment: Attendance at monthly board meetings and monthly committee meetings. Approximately 6 hours per month or as needed.
Responsibilities for Board Member include:
- Oversight of the organization
- An understanding of non-profit compliance policies and procedures
- Risk management skills to steward the organization to success
- Strong expertise and experience in the legal and/or compliance sector on both the provincial and federal level
- Supporting Storytelling Toronto at our events, fundraisers and programs.
- Time Commitment: Attendance at monthly board meetings and monthly committee meetings. Approximately 6 hours per month or as needed.
What do you need to succeed?
- Be a resident of the Greater Toronto Area and support the Storytelling Toronto mission, vision and values
- Strong legal acumen, understanding of non-profit responsibilities, and risk management skills
- Hold a financial designation and/or have comparable experience
- Understanding of internal and external controls
- Be familiar with a governance-based Board of Directors and non-profit organizations, including the specific financial requirements of a registered charity
- Collaboration skills that you can apply to working with shared leadership and in cross-functional teams
- Strong, strategic self-management and organizational skills
