Looking to the Past to See Ourselves Better

May 10, 2023 from 6:15 pm - 7:30 pm

$10 – $15

In this series of stories, Chantal Lim, Stéphanie Bénéteau, and Christine Malec invite us to look into the past, to see ourselves better.

This event will be live-streamed.

Event Program:

Chantal Lim:
Ancient Dying Chinese Dialect is about Hokkien, one of the oldest Chinese dialects in existence. Through true personal stories, it explores how language shapes our sense of self, family, and belonging.

Stéphanie Bénéteau:
Near to where Erysichthon resided was a grove sacred to the goddess Demeter. The grove abounded with every sort of tree, but at its heart was a mighty oak…How Erysichton’s greed led to his demise is an ancient myth, but also a hallucinatory tale for the future.

Christine Malec:
Historically, music has been one of the few arenas where a blind person might achieve some level of honour and social recognition. These stories begin with three real historical figures. The stories bring them to life as warm, breathing, complex characters in order to imagine what it was like to attain notoriety in a society where your peers had remarkably few opportunities for independence or respect.
